I've noticed this the last couple nights in reviewing Leno. Jay has
started having some pretty less-than-positive reactions when he takes
shots at others.

Last night, Leno went from mentioning James Cameron on the show to a
reference to the sequel that will take place around the time that NBC
figures out their late night lineup. Then it takes an odd turn:

"(turns to Kevin) And Letterman's been hammering me every night! Oh,
going after me. Hey Kevin: you know the best way to get Letterman to
ignore you? (Kevin: What?) (turns to audience) Marry him."

And the audience's response is pretty mixed. After about two seconds,
you clearly hear something that sounds like boos (or, at the very
least, ooohs).

This is after the previous night, where in doing some sort of search
engine bit (side bar: you can tell whomever wrote the bit hasn't used
an actual search engine in about 15 years, because he puts a plus sign
between each term), he types "red hair" then "overrated," and the
audience lets him have it pretty robustly, then he types "millionaire"
and the audience is still on his case. The punch line is an image of
Carrot Top (the "hi-larious" switcheroo)

Now, the one fall back Leno has had all these years is that, even if
he's a lousy talk show host, at least he's a reasonably-good comedian.
If no one at his show can't notice that his own audience doesn't like
these jokes.

As a baseline to compare it to, Scottish Conan did a joke two nights
ago on Mackenzie Phillips that absolutely bombed, and he reacted and
turned it around.
