OK, another telethon is upon us, and I am once again forced to ask the question: Since when did we decide that telethons had to be depressing things?
Jerry Lewis and the folks at Comic Relief tried for years to keep things lively and entertaining, sliding in a little message here and there. Things have changed. Though the performances are top notch so far and the audio is the best of any of the rushed telethons (the audio for the 9/11 telethon was beyond bad and the Katrina telethon was best viewed with the sound muted entirely), after 25 minutes of this thing I'm ready to slash my wrists. Just because a telethon is trying to raise money for a tragic situation doesn't mean the telethon needs to be suicide-inducing. What happened to a call-to-action? What happened to making some noise? What the @#!% happened to a live audience allowed to applaud when Stevie F-ing Wonder belts out a song? -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
