yep - performance rights of a Musical Work are different from a
broadcast right of a Sound Recording.

Another issue here might be that rights for the band to play a song
*may be* notably cheaper than the rights to broadcast the original
tune. Questlove may have been mixed up about that, since the first
"ridiculously expensive" bit involved the master for "Satisfaction"
(at least that's what Conan said, can't be sure the master was what
was played).
Bushkin probably has as much to worry about from Daly being the Carson
that comes to mind first for most people these days than anything
else. I don't know the specific tale, but can infer disgruntled
employee from Tim's description.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think there was any way the figure
could be right. You'd think that someone at the Daily News would do
some actual reporting to find out if the figure was correct rather
than just rely on a tweet.
BTW, in related talk show news, there's another story in the Daily
News today (in Rush and Molloy's column) with the headline "Original
'Tonight Show' host Johnny Carson was deeply unhappy man, says Henry
'Bombastic' Bushkin." It's about a book proposal that Carson's
longtime lawyer and confidant is shopping around, and it has some
predictably sordid details. While it looks like the reporters did some
actual work on this one, including getting a quote from Joanne Carson
condemning the book, there's nothing here about the reason Carson
fired Bushkin, which Bill Carter recounted in "The Late Shift." That
incident might make one question Bushkin's motives for writing the
book.
