Count me among those who are hoping that the inimitable PGage will give us a
look at a comparison on ratings once Jay's new/old gig has completed a week
(comparison between 10pm Jay, 11:35pm Jay, and the new 10pm NBC lineup, to
be super specific about it...c'mon PGage, you know you wanna...)

better be good

I think one needs to draw the distinction between a great comic and a
dependable one.

My criticism of Jerry Seinfeld has always been the polar opposite of
my criticism of Jay Leno. Watching "Seinfeld," I found I would laugh
out loud and enjoy maybe one out of every 10 episodes. I thought the
other nine out of 10 fell flat on their faces. And Seinfeld's standup
affects me in much the same way. But I still think Seinfeld has great
comedic talent, because he isn't afraid of falling down nine times if
he succeeds on the tenth.

Put another way, Jay Leno will always hit a ground ball and make it to
first. Jerry Seinfeld will always try to hit a home run, but strike
out a lot of the time. Given the choice, I much prefer Seinfeld's
style.

My guess is that whatever the average of his 10pm ratings were (PGage
can provide that, I'm sure), Leno's 11:35 numbers will be about the
same once the dust settles.

Leno is not a great player, or to lose the analogy, he is not a great
comic. But he is a dependable one. NBC wants dependability right now.
I want great. We are at an impasse.
