"Updated, 3/10 3:16 p.m. | Robert
Halderman<http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/robert_joel_halderman/index.html>,
the man accused of trying to extort $2 million from David Letterman, pleaded
guilty on Tuesday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan and will serve six
months in jail. As part of the plea agreement, Mr. Halderman will also serve
four and a half years probation and must perform 1,000 hours of community
service. Saying that he felt “great remorse for what I have done,” Robert
Halderman, a CBS producer, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted grand
larceny."

So much for the "it was only a screenplay" defense, and the second extortion
threat to embarrass Dave on the witness stand during the trial.
