For a long time since the advent of tape "Today" in the Central time zone was the second hour live, then the first hour on tape. I believe the change was made because "Good Morning America" started being on tape for both hours in Central and this was when "GMA" was at the height of the David Hartman/Joan Lunden era when it was kicking "Today"'s butt in the ratings.

The live hour/taped hour airing of "Today" in the CT was also the genesis of Chevy Chase announcing that Gen Franco was still dead on Weekend Update.
