We've noted before on this message board that reality TV is hardly a
new concept. However, credit for this generation's surge of reality
has to go to the folks at Bunim-Murray. As the company behind MTV's
"Real World" and "Road Rules," they certainly set the standard for
modern reality TV. And now that company is no longer a US brand. It
has been acquired by a foreign syndicate, who wants to use the B-M
know-how to expand into international markets ("El Mundo De
Realidad"?).

I was a fan of the early seasons of "The Real World," and watched the
series regularly through the Hawaii season. I make no apologies for it
-- it was who I was at the time. I'll even admit that Amaya from that
season is on my short list of women I'd want to spend a weekend with,
on the condition that she didn't know my real name or where I lived
(Drew Barrymore is also on that lost, for the record).

The Bunim-Murray formula is to assemble a colorful cast of young,
strong-willed, dynamic individuals, then put them in a metaphorical
fish bowl to see what transpires. Usually, what transpires is binge
drinking, clubbing, shouting, and some sex. And I guess that is fun to
watch if you are young enough to believe that is what life is all
about, or even right at the age when you don't know if life is all
about that. But once you reach the age where you know there is more to
life, the concept loses its luster.
