The record was 26 innings in (I think) 1920. The Boston Braves and
Brooklyn Dodgers were tied 1-1 when the game was called on account of
darkness. Both pitchers (the immortal Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger)
pitched complete games.
YACS, sorta.
That 1-1 game in 26 innings is the longest in MLB history -- surprisingly
lasting only 3:50 -- but the longest affiliated professional game (by
innings) was a 1981 International League game between Pawtucket and
Rochester.
The PawSox won 3-2 in 33 innings; the game had been suspended after 32 upon
orders of the league's commissioner at 4:07am (with 19 people left in the
stadium) and was resumed upon Rochester's next trip to Pawtucket.
