I have been too busy, and to demoralized by how hard it is to get timely numbers, to track the late night horse race closely. I was going to post something like what the tvbythenumbers guys posted yesterday, but I was not sure of the Conan/Dave numbers. Here is their report: *********************** "Seven weeks into Jay Leno’s *Tonight Show* 2.0 and his ratings trend is eerily similar to Conan O’Brien’s. Jay’s beaten David Letterman’s *Late Show * all seven weeks, but so did Conan’s *Tonight Show* after seven weeks. While Jay took over the *Tonight Show* for the second time on March 1, 2010 and Conan took the *Tonight Show* on June 1, 2009, once you line up their ratings by week number instead of by date the trends look awfully similar. Jeff Zucker turned his network inside out to put Jay back at 11:30 and this is what he got?" ************************* They have a nice chart that graphs Conan vs Dave in Conan's first 7 weeks at Tonight along with Leno vs Dave in the first 7 weeks of Leno's return. It looks to me like the last week in this graph is from reruns, at least for Dave (I am not sure about that). aside from that week, Leno is starting to get around a 1.1, with Dave around 1. If it does stabilize around that level, it will mean that Leno is doing worse vs Dave than Coco was doing until Week 17, when Dave got a lot of look-ins during the announcement of his extortion (which he parlayed into a neck and neck race with Conan until the end (despite the BS put out by NBC and Leno, Dave never beat Conan in the demo ratings more than 1 week in a row. They alternated, and often tied. I assume if Leno starts to average 1.0, he will resign, as he will be a failure by the standard he applied to Conan. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
