Kevin Newman has announced he’s stepping down as anchor of Global
National, and will leave the network in August.

Newman has been the anchor and executive editor of Global National
since it first aired in September 2001. He has been a journalist for
almost 30 years, reporting from the front lines of the war in Iraq and
anchoring live coverage of the September 11 attacks.

The search for a new national anchor is underway, and Newman will work
with Global to make the transition a smooth one.

“It is an understatement to say he will be deeply missed,” said Peter
Viner, president of Canwest Broadcasting. “His leadership as executive
editor of Global National has helped define what our news organization
stands for.”

Viner said Newman is not leaving to work for another broadcaster but
rather because he believes “it’s time to make a change.” He added that
Newman is looking forward to "an extended period of travel and
relaxation.”

Newman will also be completing a series of documentaries exclusively for Global.

Before starting at Global National, Newman worked for ABC News,
hosting and reporting for Nightline, World News Tonight and Good
Morning America.

Newman has also been a national correspondent for CTV and CBC, and was
co-host of CBC's Midday in the early 1990s.

Before that, he worked at Global, ripping wire copy in the Toronto
newsroom, then working for Global’s Sportsline. He later reported from
Queen's Park and Global's Ottawa bureau.

Newman has won two Gemini Awards for Best News Anchor as well as two
Emmy Awards and a distinguished Peabody Award in the U.S.

His last newscast will be August 20.
