I was on the road this weekend. I pull into our hotel about 10:00 pm
Saturday night to register and see a muted television tuned to CNN, slowly I
realize they are talking about what from the graphics appears to be some
kind of terrorist attack on Manhattan (I think the title was something like
"Times Square Locked Down! Car Bomb suspected". I literally freaked out (my
daughter is a college student there). I left the clerk standing and ran back
to my wife waiting in the car with the cell phone yelling "call her, call
her!" We wound up waking her up (rare that she is sleeping at 1:15 am on a
saturday night) and of course she was fine and told us to chill out.

The thing is, just a few weeks ago I called her while watching 24 because of
a terrorist group that was about to blow up a car bomb on the upper west
side of Manhattan, about 20 blocks from her apartment. She said her and her
boyfriend were in the middle of a heated argument about whether the ethical
and human sacrifice being required to prevent the explosion was worth it
(given that they felt like there were in the blast zone). I have to say my
usual liberal position on such things took a hit when I contemplated my
daughter being a target. But then, that is why we don't let the father's of
daughters under attack determine the proper response to such things.
