Well, good writing is really, really (really) hard, and thus fairly rare. It
is a lot easier to be a good actor, and for good actors to consistently act
good, then it is to be a good actor.

SNL always has to be graded on the curve, which fluctuates from year to
year. In recent seasons bad episodes are almost unwatchable by me, but above
average ones are still pretty good, and I would say at least one out of
three or four are even better than that. If you compare each current episode
to the best episode you remember from when you were a "kid" (high school or
college age) then you will always be disappointed.
