Despite being a TiVo fan, I have to praise one of the good things about
the DirecTV-branded DVRs:  they automatically do "soft padding" when
possible, of about 30 seconds at the beginning of each recording and 90
seconds at the end; better yet, recordings of consecutive shows on the
same channel are overlapped, so those 90 seconds end up appearing as part
of both recordings.
