I guess it is because Carlos doesn't really show up on my radar, whereas you can't drop a deuce in a public restroom without hearing somebody hyping the work of Tina. I happened to like Mean Girls, and I went into that film expecting to hate it, but on SNL I always noticed that she would pause to wait for laughter during sketches and in Update segments, but the laughter wasn't always there. She came across as someone who thought more of herself than she maybe had a right to. And then there is the unfunny nature of 30 Rock, but we've had that discussion before. To me, if someone or something is going to be overhyped, it is in my nature to be skeptical. As a result, the bar is set very high. Batman Begins is a good example of something overhyped that happened to live up to the hype. The reboot of the James Bond franchise is another. In both of those instances, I expected the worst and ended up being pleased. So, back when Studio 60 and 30 Rock debuted on the same week, the overhyped Studio 60 pilot blew me away, while the equally overhyped 30 Rock pilot left me wanting. Carlos Mencia struck me as very generic in terms of comedy. The two examples Maron played of Mencia stealing from other comics were blatant, and Mencia's defense was that the subject material was unoriginal and more or less lent itself to identical jokes. I prefer comics whose material is uniquely theirs. A Bob Newhart bit could only be done by Newhart. A George Carlin bit could only be done by Carlin. A Bill Hicks bit could only be done by Hicks... and Denis Leary, but that's not important right now. > > On May 25, 10:06 pm, "Kevin M." <[email protected]> wrote: >> On Tue, May 25, 2010 at 9:24 PM, PGage <[email protected]> wrote: >> > I detest Mencia so I am not sure if I will subject myself to that one, >> > unless we get word of some interesting confrontation in the re-do. >> >> I am largely indifferent towards Mencia (as I mentioned, I consider >> Dane Cook to be the thief among thieves), so mine is nothing more than >> curiosity for curiosity's sake.
