Mark - exactly my point. I think there was a lot of hope coming into
"MacGruber" that, a decade removed from "Superstar"/"Ladies Man" and
in a a period of renewed vigor for the R-rated comedy, that
"MacGruber" might do well, but it just wasn't to be. I think the
fault lies in two places: 1) the character as written in the film was
too far removed from the source material - I don't recall there being
so many poop jokes in the sketches on SNL; and 2) late May/early June
was just too crowded - "MacGruber" was fighting for eyeballs with a
bunch of big-budget films (including Iron Man)...it might have done
better if NBCUni had held it for August.

Tom - "MacGruber" may yet make money thanks to overseas distro
(although I wouldn't bet on it - SNL doesn't have the name recognition
value overseas that it does here...at least, not anymore), but it's
still not what I'd call a success in any sense of the word. (And dear
god I hope you're wrong about E!Movies.)

And while I realize that "Zohan" wasn't DIRECTLY an SNL film, the
characterizations of Israelis and certain catchphrases ("Disco
disco!", "Is Sony guts!", etc.) can be traced back to the Sabra
sketches, including "Sabra Price is Right". Lorne Michaels might not
have been running or financing the film, but Zohan's SNL roots were
clearly on display. (Hair pun not intended.)

PGage - I actually liked BB2000 - it certainly wasn't anywhere near as
good as the original, but it was a fun 'road' movie and had an amazing
soundtrack.
