Lorne Michaels, the Canadian-born producer who created Saturday Night Live, will receive an international Emmy in November for his work on the hit comedy show. The 2010 International Emmy Directorate Award will be presented to him at a gala ceremony Nov. 22 in New York. "With Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels opened the door to a new kind of comedy on television and since then nearly everyone has walked through it," said Bruce Paisner, president of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, in a statement issued Monday. "He has changed our entertainment, affected our politics and shaped the way we view the world." Saturday Night Live is now in its 35th season, making it the longest running weekly late-night TV program, and it remains a significant ratings hit. Michaels is also producing Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and 30 Rock, the Emmy-winning drama starring Tina Fey. Born and raised in Toronto, Michaels went to Los Angeles in 1968 to work as a writer for Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show. In 1975 he pioneered the concept of a Saturday night comedy show shot before a live audience. He also founded Broadway Video Entertainment, which helped secure an international audience for SNL. Other production credits include The Kids in the Hall, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and films such as Baby Mama, Mean Girls and Wayne's World. The International Emmy Awards, held Nov. 22, recognize programs from around the world in 15 categories. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
