I'm pretty sure that Countdown's on tape after the first airing. On the night of one of the recent primary elections, I can remember somebody (possibly Lawrence O'Donnell) doing a new, live first segment at 10 PM, then going back to a recorded Olbermann after the first break.
Rachel Maddow seems a little bit more willing to do a second live show later in the evening, but I can remember at least once in the last few weeks where the discussion during the 11 PM airing was about an imminent Congressional vote while the control room put up video of the vote happening and rather urgent-looking graphics to try to point out that the vote had actually happened in the two hours since the discussion took place.
