The onetime "Oz", "SVU" and "Rescue Me" costar almost succumbed to a bacterial infection, lost two toes and half his thumb to gangrene, and required many operations, but still managed to get a part in the "30 Rock" finale this past season, and now takes over for Dennis Haysbert as Allstate pitchman:
