I seem to recall reading somewhere that IE7 would stop being supported (and, in fact, its use would be discouraged) by year's end, but it would be longer than that before most websites won't correctly run on it. My mom bought an iMac about seven years ago, and I can confess that -- as a lifelong Apple user myself -- what you're talking about is actually a weakness in Macs. The older systems and applications eventually won't do what their modern versions can. Her computer had more memory than she needed, a larger hard drive than she needed, and a faster processor than she needed (she bought the higher-end model because she liked the "pretty screen"). But about six months ago, Firefox and Safari wouldn't update anymore. Adobe Flash stopped working, and the handful of things she actually did on her reasonably powerful -- even by modern standards -- computer (like play games through Facebook or watch YouTube videos), she couldn't do anymore. So, I took an eight-year-old PC that my former place of employment had in surplus, paid $40 for another gig of RAM, and it does everything a new computer would be able to do (and it does so running XP, which I still prefer to Vista). -- Kevin M.
