I'd have to agree that "Vincent and the Doctor" is an attempt to address some
significant issues. But with Amy doing a fair amount of avoidance of growing
up
(explicitly, or with the assistance of whatever is pulling this series'
strings), I am sympathetic to criticisms of this series being aimed more at the
kiddies or told with a broader brush. In the Vincent episode, while the actor
playing Vincent was quite good, the story didn't really engage deeply with his
mental state aside from the scene describing Starry Night and the museum
guide's
speech at the end.

That said, I have a hard time describing a show that goes to the monster well
pretty frequently as a kiddie program. Shallow horror, at least for me,
doesn't
mean it's for kids.

What bugs is that Moffat wrote "The Empty Child" - arguably the best horror of
this run of Doctor Who, and certainly an important episode for the series and
Torchwood. That was a proper adult episode.

Funny you should use that metaphor since the themes in this season's
wonderous "Vincent and the Doctor" - the one about Van Gogh in his
final year before commiting suicide - were so textured and adult in
nature.
