I'd add a couple points to your argument. One, the general media has
adopted the mentality that talk radio started pushing 25 years ago:
your opinion is just as valid as the next person. Because of this, the
population in general has decided that it's okay to share your opinion
with anyone (and, thanks to the Internet, anyone is now everyone).
There are two problems: people neglected to remember that everyone, in
fact, includes everyone else ("the world would be so much better if
everyone just believed what I believed"). People also failed to learn
the responsibility of sharing your opinion: backing it up with fact.
This does not mean that only people who made the debate team can share
their opinion; rather, it means that you have to prepare to back up
your opinion with facts, logic, and reason. I greatly enjoy poking the
bears when it comes to this: I had a back and forth with a relative on
Facebook a couple months back in which she espoused an opinion, I
pointed out the factual errors of the opinion, she proceeded to ignore
that, I pointed out that she still hasn't resolved the first error and
has introduced a second, and it went back and forth until she called
me unamerican, and I dropped the topic. (Yes, I'm terrible for doing
this. You can get in line behind my mother and wife complaining to me
about it)
Jonah Lehrer talked in his blog last week about the political
dissonance that grabs root in so many people. The very short,
oversimplified version: the less you know about something, the
increased likelihood that you are overconfident in your errant belief
(e.g., welfare haters tend to think that almost all people on welfare
are black). It's well worth a read.
