"Plausible" left the conversation long ago, or they wouldn't be able
to do much of what they have with Dwight.

To your larger point:

The problem isn't/won't be losing Carell. As good as he is, it's
possible to bring in a new and different manager who will offer some
new directions to the writers. The problem I have with The Office is
that's it's drifted into late Ed territory, where the network wants to
see and focus on soap opera elements at the expense of the interesting
characters and situations that made the show worthwhile, and the
production staff acquiesces. If they can't fix that, I'd like to see
the series end.
