Except that mainstream critics like you'd find at EW or Variety enjoy partying with the cool kids in Hollywood, and way too many of them are reluctant to call a bad idea a bad idea (though they will jump on the bandwagon if the tide turns) if it means alienating a producer, network, or star. In this instance, it is also about seeming relevant and not seeming to be aligned with an outfit like the PTC. Conan O'Brien made fun of Twitter and was accused of alienating the young, crazy, hip kids who use Twitter. So while any thinking person could argue that basing a television series about 140 characters and getting William Shatner (who, at this point, is a living caricature of himself) to star is asinine, I haven't found many critics stating as much.
