Something they don't exactly mention (mostly because they like to keep
it a secret) is that the staff/crew members running up and down the
lines outside the auditions are usually not ordinary production
assistants or runners. They are usually from the talent department,
trying to get a look at potential contestants in their unrehearsed and
unstaged moments. In those early auditions, more often than not, what
happens in front of the camera is superfluous, since the field is
narrowed down in the line itself. Talent coordinators look for
gregarious, naturally charismatic characters ("characters" was the
word I always heard in talent departments for various singing,
reality, and game shows from my nefarious past). Those who stand in
line whining about how long it takes are cut. Those who don't
understand the process and are rude to the staff working the line are
cut. But for those eager to get onto one of those shows, be aware that
the moment you get out of your car, you need to be "on." And you also
need therapy. Or a smack upside the head.
