The NYT's point was that the American public is tuning out the Afghan war, since Katie was there for two of the nights in the week (which they explain is actually an all-time low, not just a 20 year low). I have not watched a network evening news cast for at least a year - and that is from someone who loves the news, and is entering the grey-beard cohort that these newscasts are supposedly aimed at. Like a lot of folks here, that doesn't mean I have tuned out the news, just that I can get more of it, and better, and sooner, elsewhere. For context and analysis I will go to Newshour, and to get the same with the ideological twist I am more comfortable with I will go to Rachel. But we still need good, strong and vibrant network news operations, and I wish they would stop trying to do less more superficially, and instead do more. A quick look at the numbers suggest that a lot of Americans are still watching the evening news - about 19 million per night across the 3 networks in the week discussed in the linked article, which compares with about the same number of people watching the three networks in the third hour of primetime last night (Tuesday). -- TV or Not TV ....
