The man who made Chicago's WGN Radio "Radio Home of Millions Thruout Mid-America" (to use Col. McCormick spelling) and WGN-TV "Chicago's Very Own Television Station" by, among other things, hiring a comedy team from a Cincy station and keeping them on staff when their act bombed in Chicago to see them become individual successes. They were Bob "Bozo" Bell and Wally Phillips, WGN Radio's legendary morning drive host for decades. Mr. Quaal later became head of the Tribune Co.'s broadcasting division--his textbook on broadcast management was used in many colleges and the Broadcast Foundation's Pioneer Award was renamed in Mr. Quaal's honor:
