The Segway does seem to have found some measure of success in fleet situations 
- 
touring businesses, police, postal workers (though I haven't seen mention of 
this as much as I used to).

While I am morbidly amused at the irony, you can't blame Segway for
someone driving one off a cliff, just as you can't blame bicycles,
skateboards or even cars for the same. Operator error is operator
(sometimes fatal) error.

And now a related, umm, segue: Many police departments use Segways
very effectively for officers patrolling areas where cars wouldn't
make sense, such as on tourist plazas and boardwalks, inside airports
and other places where getting places without causing undue fatigue --
and giving the officer an elevated view of the crowd -- is important.
