According to what I read in the Los Angeles Times this morning, they
will remain non-commercial because their license requires it. During
"pledge weeks" (which seem to come about every other month these days)
KCET and other stations use the phrase "support your public television
station" as much -- if not more -- than "support your local PBS
station." So I don't think there is a legal basis for refunding
pledges, etc.

The general manager of the largest of the present "secondary" PBS
stations -- KOCE in Orange County -- said they plan to increase the
amount of PBS programming on their station as a result of KCET's
decision. I was surprised to note that KOCE was only 20% PBS; it
seemed to be a much higher amount.

The other two PBS secondary stations are not much of a factor; KLCS is
owned by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LCS="LA City
Schools") and carries little beyond Sesame Street and the News Hour.
KVCR is at San Bernardino Valley College and has a signal that does
not reach far beyond the Inland Empire; unless you (like I) get your
television via DirecTV or Dish and have it included as a "local
channel" for the L.A. market, you're not going to receive it outside
of the Riverside-San Bernardino area.

I feel sorry for the people whose PBS comes from KCET translators and
cable importation of same. They are truly screwed by this decision.

According to W9WI.com, KCET is received in the following areas via
translators: Bakersfield, China Lake, Daggett, Lucerne Valley, Morongo
Valley, Ridgecrest, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Victorville.
