In the case of HBO shows, would the various cable/satellite On Demand services
be a good way to check out shows, or is the selection of episodes limited in
comparison to Netflix Streaming?

Netflix Streaming is turning out to be a gold mine for TV episodes. If
somebody wants to see a single episode of a show, or wants to see a
couple of episodes of a show in order to get an idea of whether this
would be a good show to own the DVD set, I recommend finding out if
Netflix is already streaming that show. Netflix doesn't have a deal
with HBO so those shows won't be there.
