I'll admit to being a big Top Chef fan as well as an Iron Chef fan. And
while its true that I don't learn how to cook anything from watching the
show, to me that criticism is like complaining that baseball players don't
stop the game to spend time giving a batting clinic or that I dont learn how
to play the guitar by watching music videos. The goal of the show is not to
teach me how to cook but to show the viewers people cooking interesting
things in interesting ways, which is really what my interest is. And while
Top Chef sometimes dwells more on the personalities and less on the cooking
than I would like, it generally does a pretty good job of sticking to its
core goals.

These kinds of shows might not be your cup of tea, but it seems like a weird
criticism to make. There are a number of shows that do try to teach people
how to cook -- why not just watch one of those instead of complaining about
the others? I dont turn on football games and then complain that they arent
playing baseball.
