The BG people always talked about how they wanted to avoid the hyper focus
on made-up science (and static camera and direction, and neat, tidy episode
plot resolutions, and "bumpy" aliens, etc) that characterized ST. But I
think you might be overemphasizing their dissing of ST. Indeed, in the
article you link to Moore notes that the main reason they wanted to zig
where Trek zagged was because Trek had done those things so well and so
long, and they didn't just want to be another pale imitation.

In many ways BG was more scientific than Trek - what they did more (not
completely of course) was avoid magical future science solutions to the
practical problems of living and traveling in space. But the commentaries on
BG all full of them saying "or on ST we did this, or I always wanted to try
that but they wouldn't let me", so I think it is pretty clear that the ghost
of ST was never too far from the BG set.

I liked both ST:NG and BG, so I guess I like Moore's writing and creative
decision making.
