He did make the documentary, called "A Boy Named Charlie Brown," in 1963; it 
wasn't released for years (although it's now available on DVD), but the Vince 
Guaraldi soundtrack was released in 1964, and the animated sequences served as 
a good pitch to get "A Charlie Brown Christmas" made in 1965.
