I'm a little bothered by all of this. I reject the entire premise that Fallon and his people intentionally choose obscure bands for a show that airs in the middle of the night. It assumes that they have the option of booking artists like Springsteen nightly, but elect not to. I think this is all a load of crap. Look at Letterman's and O'Brien's incarnations of Late Night and you'll see several unknowns on the musical roster with a few big name acts sprinkled in here and there. Frankly, Leno's Tonight Show is the same way, though with a higher percentage of big names. At least when I was watching Letterman on CBS, his show seemed to be operating with the mindset of: If the musical guest isn't a big draw, don't book it (or shove him in as a day player with the CBS orchestra). -- Kevin M.
