Because, as Bill Maher pointed out very early in the run of "Politically Incorrect," fame is a drug. Many celebrities will appear wherever they can (remember "Celebrity Boxing"?) and do whatever it takes to stay in the spotlight (lock a hooker in a closet). I've been reimmersing myself in the Hollywood culture these last two week, surrounding myself with people just waiting for their chance to pop. And they might just make it, but seeing them now, I cannot help but find the dreams I had when I first entered the business in the 1990s to be some combination of silly and sad. Aaron Sorkin romanticized Hollywood inasmuch as his shows tend to glorify the writer and other people who work behind-the-scenes, but the reality is that the stars will always be the ones who shine -- and very few little kids say that they want to be a key grip or a gaffer when they grow up. May aim (or one of them anyway) at being in on the ground floor with some of these young, new talents is to try to get them to recognize Hollywood as more than just a place to seek fame and fortune -- that it is a place of infinite potential, and it is up to them to realize that potential or get caught up in the backwash of crap like this proposed new TV series. And I can speak from experience as someone who got caught in the backwash myself. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
