I bet that "Who Do You Think You Are?" is a very cheap show to produce, by the standards of broadcast reality TV. No set to build in the middle of the jungle or enormous house to rent for umpteen competitors, no host/star to demand exorbitant amounts of money, no flying 25+ cast members plus crew around the world, no running multiple cameras 24/7 in the hopes that somebody says something that plays into the storyline and then editing all of that down to an hour. Just some researchers, a few flights, and a celebrity who can easily be replaced if (s)he gets too demanding.
I also wouldn't be surprised if NBC sees it as a prestige show with well-off demographics, much like how "The West Wing" managed to limp along a bit longer than it might have lasted otherwise. -- David J.
