Former WNET NY exec Christopher Lukas says that the problem with public television these days is too many bland national programs and not enough local programming with (arguably left-wing) attitude, pointing to WNET's 60s and 70s heyday of shows like the nightly newscast "The 51st State" (photo accompanying piece of whitebread host and a studio audience of glowering black men) and the live black variety show "Soul!" (I turn to Mr. Delfin to see if he remembers any of those programs or if he was too busy watching the Yanks on channel 11 back then):
