I've caught some of the preview material being released online about this special, a conversation between Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, and Louis CK. This looks like the sort of show I'd like, but something tells me it won't get rave reviews from TV critics because -- if we're honest -- this show would be better as a podcast than on a pay movie channel.
That leads me to the line of thinking: Artists like Kevin Pollak, Kevin Smith, Joe Rogan, Marc Maron, and many others are bypassing (and some are even rejecting) conventional media in favor of podcasting. Podcasting allows for long-form (frankly, indefinite if not endless) interviews and full freedom of speech. Given that premise, can the network talk show continue to thrive as anything other than a promotional vehicle? I can recall episodes of Carson's Tonight Show and even Snyder's Late Late Show when celebrities and even non-celebrities came on to tell stories but NOT to plug a new movie, TV show, song, or book. I think those moments have become too rare on TV these days. I genuinely hope the podcast is able to generate revenue enough to continue. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- TV or Not TV ....
