I liked Russert - mostly because of his enthusiasm for politics. I like politics, on many levels - as a flawed and messy exercise in democracy, a tactical and strategic exercise, sporting competition. For me election day in 2000 was the start of a real tragedy for the country and our democracy, but I got a real kick out of watching it unfold with Russert. He knew how Washington worked, and he knew the players. But he was not a great journalist or interviewer, either through lack of training, temperament, or being too close to the people he was supposed to be reporting on and investigating. I'm sure he was a great guy, and your superlative may apply to his role as Washington Bureau **Chief, but not to his job as an interviewer and host of MTP. -- TV or Not TV ....
