Let's remember the difference between death of an ACTOR and death of a CHARACTER. in the case of shows like "8 Simple Rules..." and "NewsRadio", the death of the actor necessitated the death of the character, and (at least for NR) the show never really recovered its rhythm. As much as I don't like TaaHM, I believe the fact that IRL Charlie is still alive and obnoxious makes it much easier to kill off Show Charlie and move on.
