You've captured the genius of Pyramid in a nutshell--everybody can
play along, and everyone has an idea on what would be best. The
postmortems never struck me as condescending, more about keeping the
game going (I can remember times when he'd rush out and urge the
receiver not to look at the category they missed because he wanted to
try out the clues he'd thought of) and trying to improve everyone's
play. I'm also sure that, by the mid-80s, he'd always have a good clue
because he'd more than likely seen the category before.

OTOH, anyone who thought Dick Clark was living up to his name in those
postmortems should be required to watch Allen Ludden brusquely toss
out a couple of suggestions as he moved on to whatever came next.
Password was a close cousin to Pyramid, but it never worked as well
there precisely because of the host.
