I did the same thing over the past two years. Last year, I switched from DirecTV to U-Verse in a failed attempt to save money and this year I switched from U-Verse to Time Warner Cable to save money. U-Verse DVR is really nice, but the price kept going up every couple of months until it had eaten up the savings I had originally gotten by switching. My Time Warner Cable's regular price is a $100 savings over U-Verse and I got 3 months at a lower price, so I'm happy with that part.
Technology of the DVRs isn't as good, but it is close (I have 2 of the new whole home DVRs + one box that can access the recordings on the DVRs), has more hard drive capacity and the picture quality is way better. I hadn't realized how bad the U-Verse picture quality was until I had the cable installed, wow! I also still have an old Series 2 Dual Tuner attached to my cable in the bedroom.
