NBC didn't archive their shows in those days and since few owned videotape machines in the homes, most archives footage from that era was from kinescopes pointed at TV sets. Notoriously, NBC didn't save Carson's first day as host of The Tonight Show. It seems some brilliant executive had those years wiped clean so the tape stock could be reused. -- Kevin M.
