That's all true.  As I said at the beginning, I no longer correct other people's usage, saving the lecture for when they tell me *I'm* mispronouncing it.  I recognize that I'm fighting a losing battle in the evolution of language here.  :)

But language is fluid. It's not something frozen in amber. It's alive and continues to evolve as it's used.

And, this isn't a grammar issue. It's a preference issue on whether your preferred pronunciation of forte is the one that is correct. I say neither is more correct, that both are acceptible. But one of then, "fort", may make more people look at your weird than "fort-ay".

If it's whatever the usage says it is, then what's the purpose of teaching grammar in the first place?  (not that it does much good anyway).

It can be *intended to be* whatever the usage says it is.  That doesn't make it correct.  :)

It's whatever the usage says it is. I mean, decimate no longer means losing 10% of your forces, right?

hah...I've given up on "forte", but I hear you.  That's always been one of my peeves, too.  It's more trouble than it's worth to correct people anymore, so I only do it when they ask me "why are you pronouncing 'forte' that way?"

(and for those who have no idea what we're talking about, if you're referring to someone with a particular skill, that's their forte...pronounced "fort".  It's only "for-tay" when you're talking about playing a musical instrument louder than normal.)

Just want to thank you for using "lectern" rather than the all-too-
common "podium." It's one of my pet peeves (along with the
mispronunciation of "forte").
