Music rights and licensing is now one of the largest divisions of most major studios. Most reality and competition shows underperform as ex-post-facto streams, downloads, and DVD sales. It is something many short-term-thinking network execs fail to take into account when greenlighting those types of shows. A drama or comedy with less overall ratings can generate higher revenue after the airdate. Idols producers make money from album sales, concert tours, etc., but Fox sees very little of that, and as I understand it they'll see even less from The X Factor. -- Kevin M.
