Wikipedia, like it does with most television programs, has lists of each series
for DWTS.  Looking over it, active or recently retired athletes tend to go
deep, usually being amongst the last four celebrities.  Boxers, wrestlers and
MMA fighters are noted exceptions to this pattern.

Whether Artest will be like most active athletes in this show or suffer the
early exit of the only other NBA player I recognized, Clyde Drexler, is an open
question.  None of the others in this series strikes me as having a leg up on
the competition, with the possible exception of Hope Solo, the other athlete.
It's not even clear to me which of them would have a big voting constituency
that would keep them around longer than their talent would on its own.

Given how long ago the fight in Detroit was, audience familiarity may be a
bigger issue for Artest than likability.

Subject: Re: [TV orNotTV] New Dancing with the Stars contestants: if you did a
parody of the show it would still look like this

Still, I have some interest in this, as an NBA and Laker fan. When I saw this
story on the internet last night, I tried to search for information about how
long the average contestant lasts. The NBA season typically begins around
Halloween - this dancing show, seems to start in late September, and also seems
to be fairly live. Assuming Artest (who is going to court September 16 to
legally change his name to Meta World Peace, and plans to have "Peace" on the
back of his jersey) is not going to win the contest (I think this must be a
fair assumption - I don't know what the factors are that keep a contestant on
the show, but judging by the success of Smith and Rice I assume likeability is
one factor), is it likely a middle-of-the road contestant would be done by mid
October? The NBA of course is facing a lockout, and negotiations do not look
good. It seems very unlikely that the season will start on time - I am just
wondering if Artest has now committed
himself to something that would guarantee he is not available even in the very
unlikely event that it did. When is this show usually over? If Artest did win,
would he be on through maybe the end of December, or into January? If the NBA
season is at all to be salvaged this year, my guess is that they will try to
start in January or February (the truth is, even most sports fans do not pay
much attention to the NBA until after the Super Bowl, and typically the first
nationally televised game is the Christmas Day game).
