Four of the six nominees in the category were on shows from AMC, FX, or HBO. The last episodes broadcast for The Killing, Justified and Mad Men were all within 200,000 viewers of each other (2.2-2.4 million). Hard for me to see an argument about Martindale winning as an upset that wouldn't apply to Michelle Forbes (The Killing, AMC), Kelly McDonald (Boardwalk Empire, HBO), or even Christina Hendricks (Mad Men).

I'd wager many people have never heard of "Justified". So while critics picked her, I doubt she was an odds on favorite to win the award by most observers. There were some repeat nominees, but that's not the same thing as having favorites. Now, if she had said Martindale's nomination was an upset, I think she'd have a point. > > >David > > > > >________________________________ > From: Jon Delfin <[email protected]> >To: tvornottv <[email protected]> >Sent: Monday, September 19, 2011 7:59 AM >Subject: [TV orNotTV] Alessandra Stanleyism of the day > > >Her Emmy recap in today's NYTimes includes this: > >[Melissa McCarthy's win] was one of the few upsets, along with Margo >Martindale's winning best supporting actress for "Justified." > >Martindale was an upset winner?
