I really, really don't know what to make of this. This is a country
that has struggled to support a single F1 race and whose TV contact
only puts it on OTA television for four of the 19 rounds a year (and
three of those are [expletive-deleted] tape delay). Austin hasn't even
had it's first race yet. Admittedly, you can announce a race all you
want, but it's not until late 2012 when F1 puts out their schedule
that the rubber meets the road (Austin was originally supposed to be a
June race next to Canada, but it is now the next-to-last race of the
season before Brazil).

That being said, Bernie Ecclestone (who effectively owns F1) wants
what he wants, and if it's in his mind's eye that he thinks the market
can support two races, then far be it from anyone rational to tell him
no (not that he'd listen anyway).

>From a TV side: Sky signed a six-year deal to air half the races in
Britain starting in 2012 with the BBC carrying the other half
(previously all of the races were on BBC), and suffice to say that
folks are not pleased with this development, including some of the
British teams who worry about a severe drop-off in viewership. With
the Austin race moving to November (approximately week 11 of the NFL
season), I do wonder if some of this is to appease the fine folks at
News Corp, who were undoubtedly upset that the Austin race would now
only appear on cable (I don't see Sir David Hill bumping the NFL for
these fer-ners).
