Except that it doesn't work in canon. Series 8 featured a fully-restored
(actually, slightly LARGER) and fully-crewed *Red Dwarf* (and with Rimmer
as a human, not a hologram) - and ended with the ship falling apart and the
main cast in eminent danger.

Naylor resolved NONE of this in BTE. Instead, Rimmer & Lister hang out in
what almost seems like a fan recreation of the series 1/2 sleeping
quarters, Rimmer is a hologram again, and there's no mention of Kochanski,
the nanobots, or the restored crew.

Wikipedia's entry for BTE says the series occurs nine years *after* the
events of the series 8 finale, "Only the Good..."; This works
chronologically, since the cast has obviously aged, but not in canon.

The fact that it was Chris Barrie, not one of the production staff, who
referred to the upcoming episodes as Series 10 makes me hope that BTE isn't
going to be considered canon. (I'm not really sure why this bugs me so
much, but...it does.)
