I think it's a safe bet that any time you see someone singing and dancing
(or doing choreography) at the same time (and it's not live theater), the
person is lip synching.

 

Especially, given how inexperienced the contestants are on these talent
shows, one really can't expect anything but lip synching.

 

BTW I haven't watched the X Factor.

I will admit to watching this show [excuseology deleted] and this was
painfully obvious. The only question mark was, did Bell make a mistake in
not starting on time (it did not seem like it) or did they somehow start his
track too soon. But as the link notes, it is also painfully obvious that
American Idol contestants are lip synching on those atrocious opening group
numbers, even when there aren't any technical difficulties. I don't think
the snarky comment at the end of the article is justified, as there is not
any evidence that contestants are lip synching during the competitive
portions of the show (though my goodness are these X Factor performances
horribly overproduced).
