Hubbard Radio's WTOP, the all-news station that dominates the DC market in ratings and billings, will be getting a challenger in January when CBS Radio, the dominant force in the all-news format nationally, will be launching the format on an FM station in DC-- they're moving Spanish-language WLZL from 99.1 to a new acquisition at 107.9 FM (formerly WFSI, owned by Family Radio, the Bible-thumpers whose CEO had predicted the Rapture for two dates this year and missed both times) on Dec. 1:
http://www.cbsradio.com/press_center/releases/pressrelease145027-11-16-2011.html This is part of a national trend of spoken-word formats migrating or simulcasting to FM as AM becomes more and more strictly for the aged, foreign speakers who aren't Spanish and religious stations. In most cases, these switches have displaced music formats (rock formats in particular) to the anger of those who feel that FM should be for music, but in this case the displacement of a Spanish-language format and a Bible-thumper shouldn't piss off too many people (the anger already happened a few years ago when WLZL replaced the legendary modern rocker WHFS). For added interest, WTOP has been a CBS affiliate of long standing (and the network once owned the station), Cumulus' news-talker WMAL just started an FM simulcast and NPR station WAMU regularly places in the Top 10 in the Arbitrons. -- TV or Not TV ....
